Dyslexia is a medical condition that means difficulty in reading and writing despite having a good intelligence and an appropriate learning environment. Dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence and affects around 5% to 17% of the world population regardless of language.
The most common symptoms at an early age is a great difficulty to associate the letters with the sounds that they represent. Usually dyslexic people have very poor spelling and a great difficulty to follow a sequence of things or perform instructions rapidly. At a very early age dyslexic children learn new words very slowly and have difficulties to learn new letters. Taking a test at an early stage is very important, and equally important not to deny the condition of the child and not to be ashamed of it in the case that the kid is dyslexic.
Most dyslexic people can’t reach their potential because traditional learning techniques don’t work for them so they need special ones that sometimes are not available. At school it is quite a big problem because teachers don’t focus in the special child and usually they follow the traditional method of teaching.
Probably the best tool for a dyslexic is a PC. Computers are good since they give the chance of learning in an interactive way and also word processors are great since they review grammar and spelling. By this, the confidence is boosted and this is probably the best tool for a dyslexic. In the coming articles we will review some software that are great and affordable for dyslexics. |
