TypingAid is a simple, compact and handy auto-completion utility for Windows. It is a free and open-source software licensed under GPL.

New release: TypingAid 2.0+

Important: please read "News and Update" to see the differences between 1.x and 2.x.

I'd like to share with you a program TypingAid, to demonstrate how auto-completion tool could help to improve typing speed and productivity, as well as to reduce the risk of RSI (Repetitive strain injury). With proper set up, TypingAid could also be used as a typing aid for language learners and computer users affected by conditions such as Dyslexia, learning / writing difficulty, hand disability, Repetitive strain injury, etc.

Features of TypingAid:

  • Auto-complete words and phrases in any window.
  • Auto-learn words as you type.
  • Support European languages with accents and Unicode characters.
  • Show suggestion tooltips, no toolbar used.
  • Add words and phrases to word list with shortcut key.
  • Fast and memory-efficient.
  • Portable, no installation needed.

TypingAid is made with AutoHotKeyAutoHotKey but does not require AutoHotKey to run.

Known issues

1. If choosing a phrase in the tooltip does not start the autocompletion, (possible on
Windows 7), you may need to change the SendMethod setting, see "Preferences.ini".

2. Word auto-learning imposes a limitation on the program: a word or phrase used for
autocompletion is limited to maximum 123 characters (Unicode version: 61 characters).
Longer phrase will be recognized partially. Set LearnMode=Off in "Preferences.ini" to turn off
word auto-learning.

After you have configured TypingAid to support accented characters,
3. In certain keyboard layouts where dead keys like `" are used to type accented characters.
User might encounter problems typing the dead key itself by typing [dead key] followed by
[space], an extra character could be sent out which might affect the next character. This is
a problem in AutoHotKey scripting language itself, and is difficult to fix. A work-around is to
type the dead key twice, then backspace to cancel one, and continue typing. For example to
type `abcd, type ``[Backspace]abcd instead.

4. In Windows 7 Sticky Notes, if you find that the tooltip is not showing when it should be,
turning on the helper window will help.

5. This rarely happens: the program might fail to delete one or two characters during autocompletion
(missed key problem).

joby_toss  - Some questions |92.80.199.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

Hello!
If I add to "wordlist.txt" file more than 10 expressions starting with the same 3 letters, only the first 10 are shown in the tip-box.
And how do I insert the 10th expression? If I try 1 and 0, the 1st expression has priority.
Thank you!

jason  - narrow |220.255.7.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

the tooltip only shows 10 expressions maximum.

1:1st
...
9:9th
0:10th

If you have more than 10 expressions sharing the same first 3 letters, you can type one more letter to narrow down the matching.

It's also possible to edit the source code and extend the limit.

Jordi  - characters with accents |213.98.169.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

I know there is a problem writting accents and can be solved pressing the ' key and then SPACE, the problem is that while the program is active, I can't write accented characters like: á é í ó ú
Is there any solution

Thank you, great program.

kakarukeys  - more details pls! |Manager |Y-m-d H:i:s

Hi,

we tested on Win XP,Vista,7 Wordpad
with both US International and UK Extended keyboard layouts and did not seem to encounter problem inputting áéíóú

Let me know your OS version, the application window you were working on, which language, keyboard layout you were using? We will look into the problem.

Of course:

OS: Windows XP
Languaje: Spanish international
Keyboard: Spanish
Application window: any

thank you

kakarukeys  - more details pls! |Manager |Y-m-d H:i:s

On an XP, I changed to Spanish (International Sort)
Spanish keyboard layout, but I'm using a US keyboard physically.
á is typed by pressing ´ which would be the key beside ñ on your keyboard and it is ' on my keyboard, followed by a. I have no problem keying in the accented characters. I presume you are using the latest TypingAid 1.2. Were you running other ahk script concurrently?

Jordi  - characters with accents |213.98.169.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

Yes, I'm using TypingAid 1.2 and not running other ahk script.

I've tried to configure the keyboard in US and UK layouts but I can't find the accent. (I can see the à accent but not the á).

I'm assuming these keyboards, please let me know how to test to write the accent:

http://www.bristol.ac.uk/is/learning/documentation/keyboard-r1/keyboard-r1.gif

I've tried on three different PCs.

kakarukeys  - keyboard |Manager |Y-m-d H:i:s

Sorry to hear you're facing problems, perhaps we will borrow a Spanish keyboard and try to find where the problem is. Could you register an acc on our site, so that we could contact you by email in future?

Here's what you need:

Language: 'Spanish (International Sort)'
Keyboard Layout: 'United States-International'
To type á, press ' followed by a
OR
press and hold RAlt (Alt-Gr), then press a

Language: 'Spanish (International Sort)'
Keyboard Layout: 'United Kingdom Extended'

To type á,
press and hold RAlt (Alt-Gr), then press a

I'm using a Microsoft US Keyboard (physically)
I'm not sure how these will work on a Spanish keyboard.

candiajo  - keyboard |Registered |Y-m-d H:i:s

I've tried what you posted and it works with AltGr + a in the US Keyboard layout so the problem is with the ´ key in spanish keyboards.

Please let me know if it's possible to fix that, TypingAid is a really useful program.

I've already created an account, so email me if you need, thank you.

Justin |65.78.194.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

I'm running Windows 7 and I'm having two issues with the Typing Aid:

1. Phrases that begin with one or two word letters don't get suggested. For example, when I type a-s-space, I don't get suggestions for a phrase that starts with "As of ..."

2. Using the Control-Shift-C shortcut sometimes copies the new phrase onto the end of the last phrase in the .txt document instead of making it the next entry.

Please let me know if you are aware of these issues and solutions to them. Other than these, the program is absolutely amazing. The fact that I don't have administrative privileges on my computer at work makes the program ideal, as I don't have to install it to use it. Thanks, and I appreciate your free software!

kakarukeys  - Quick reply |Manager |Y-m-d H:i:s

1. It's by design for memory efficiency
So it's not possible to autocomplete a phrase like 'as soon as possible' in 1.2

We are developing a newer version of TypingAid on AHK forum that might overcome this difficulty. Also BlitzType will not have this difficulty.

2. This could be a bug, we will do some testing on it. Thanks for reporting. In the mean time, please make sure that the last line in your wordlist is a blank line. If the last line is the last word, new word could be appended at the end of the last word.

Rob  - 100,000 english word list |98.247.83.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

Hi - I added the English word list to the default wordlist and the only things that get suggested are the phrase that come originally in the file (imagination is more important than knowledge, etc). None of the words in the English list come up, such as abandon, or abalone.

Rob  - I get it |98.247.83.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

thought of this just after sending. You have to reload the program when you edit the word list. Working very nicely as a spelling help as well!

"Anonymous" |68.84.198.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

Hello. Thank you for creating this. It works great.

I play online games here and there. I did create a simple custom wordlist for a specific game ( In English ). Even when the game is not fullscreen, running at 1030 x 800, words trigger the tooltip. However it appears and disappears. Underneath the game window I presume. Is there a way I can make it stay on top somehow?

Any help or advice you have would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Regards

kakarukeys  - re: |Manager |Y-m-d H:i:s

I've never thought the program could be used... for a game

I think the game window must be constantly drawing and it steals focus from other windows. Have you tried using the helper window, Ctrl + Shift + H?

Maniac |12.11.157.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

Lol I must say I never thought of it being used for a game either.

You'll notice that happens with any 2d app that tries to overlay itself onto a 3d game. To actually overlay onto a 3d game requires special coding which is a project unto itself. One example of a program that does this is XFire, a gaming instant messenger. They have to write hack code for every game they support. Another one is Playxpert (another gaming instant messenger)... they accomplish their overlay via a system level driver they install.

Your only workaround may be the helper window as kakarukeys suggested (when in windowed mode).

orks  - keywords |189.110.10.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

I have a list of 20 servers all with different 3 beginning letters that I need to choose one to type on a field. I'd like to, for example, type ".aa" and get a list with all of them so i can choose one.
I didn't find a way to do that with TA as it does not work with keywords.
Does anybody have any hint for this?
Thanks. Orks

kakarukeys  - could you elaborate? |Manager |Y-m-d H:i:s

for example what are the names of your servers? What do you wish to get in the tooltip after you type ".aa"?

Robert Spaulding  - PgUp PgDn |148.134.37.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

Would it be possible to allow PgUp/Dn to offer 10 more suggestions in the tooltip if more then 10 entries in the wordlist meet the criteria. My word list has ~5000 entries many of which contain the same text for the first 20 to 30 characters.

Anonymous  - re: PgUp PgDn |220.255.7.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

I roughly get what you mean. If you can send me the wordlist, to the address in the 'contact us' link, I will be more certain.

You can set the no. of lines displayed in the tooltip (default = 10) in the preferences.ini Does it help?

Maniac |12.11.157.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

I know what he wants, I've thought of it before. The PgUp/Dn was more just added as a quick way to get around the currently displayed list. Currently 2.09 is still focused on the number keys, but I'm slowly making changes (see 2.12 on the forums) to increase focus on the arrow keys. This may not change until we stop using a ToolTip and switch to a more proper looking list though; I'm not sure when that will be.

Robert Spaulding  - Tooltip Sort |148.134.37.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

Would it be possible to sort tips containing numerical data in ascending order without requiring a leading zero?

word 1
word 11
word 2

is current display, would like to see tip display

word 1
word 2
word 11

Anonymous |220.255.7.xxx |Y-m-d H:i:s

this shouldn't be a problem because if you order the words/phrases the way you want in the wordlist.txt it will appear same way in the tooltip. Let me know if this isn't true in your case
