Computer desktops were conceived to work as a real desktop when they were created, and it has changed very little since the first versions of windows. The odd thing of looking like a real desktop is that it ends up as messy as a real desktop and having to clean it is quite a pain and time consuming.

Most of us have a lot of documents, folders and shortcuts placed on the desktop and in the end it is quite difficult to find what we are looking for and tidying it up is consuming time too so, it was a nice idea to create something that would help us to keep our desktop tidy and organized and this is where BumpTopBumpTop comes into the picture.

It's good to have one lightweight text editor that runs faster and consumes less memory than a word processor or an IDE because very often we just want to jot down something or make some changes real quick. What we need is something that can do more than the default windows notepad. There are a few choices of notepad replacement out there, we fancy Notepad2Notepad2 for a number of reasons. Not surprisingly, Notepad2 as with other notepad replacements has its features desgined to ease programming tasks because it was created by a programmer. But many functions are useful for general text editing as well.

How do I learn programming from scratch? Which programming language should I choose? Which programming language is the best? These are the questions I often hear or see in forum postings. Usually the person who asked the question had zero programming experience and wish to learn programming real fast. When we are faced with so many choices: Java, C++, PHP, Ruby on Rails, .NET, surely we want to find which is the best.

As much as the questions posted, the answers I often hear are that it doesn't matter which one you choose, all of them have the essential features that you need to pick up, or that there is no best programming language. In fact, this answer is wrong. There is a best language for starter. It's called

This 5-part series of reviews is a reply to a statement in

Debunking Common Windows Performance Tweaking MythsDebunking Common Windows Performance Tweaking Myths

which says "I’d go a step further: Don’t run registry cleaner programs, period. I won’t go so far as to call them snake oil, but what possible performance benefits can you get from “cleaning up” unneeded registry entries and eliminating a few stray DLL files?"

We choose to take the scientific approach, to prove or disprove something, what is better and more objective than testing the assumption in an experiment. Find out whether registry cleaner is useful or not in our 5-part reviews which are the results of our experiment.

If you are a professional you probably have a lot of different IMs to get in touch with your workers, providers, buyers etc… it is quite a pain to open all of them when you start the system and although you can set them all to open at startup they will slow down your computer and you will get a lot of icons in the system tray. It is also quite a mess to manage them all at the same time, you never know which person is talking to you on which one etc…

This is why there are programs like Pidgin which can use all of your IMs at the same time in a single program. Pidgin is open source for free and you won’t pay at all or see any ads to use it.

AutoHotkey isn't new. It has been around since '03 and has attracted for itself a sizable user community that keeps producing and sharing useful scripts and feedback to keep the program development going. It has also been featured in many popular sites before, such as MaximumPCMaximumPC.AutoHotkey is a multi-purpose free, open-source utility for Windows, capable of

Backup process is very important in computing as it minimizes the risk of losing important data when disaster strikes. But it could be a slow and arduous process if the amount of data that need to be protected is huge. In this review, we recommened a freeware, Cobian Backup, that helps to automate our backup process and saves us a lot of time. It can be used for synchronization of files between two locations as well.

We are aware of the existence of some online backup services that offer convenient backup of files to internet servers on a secure location. However, they didn't quite interest us, because to enable backup or restoration of files at anytime, the site need to have 100% uptime which is technically impossible. And using such a service would mean we are betting on the financial stability of the company and pray that they will not go bust within the lifetime of our data. Lastly, the storage space given is usually limited. One should also not rely on the software on our USB drive. Because some of these software choose what files to backup by themselves. This isn't helpful to us. Different drives have different software, that always takes time to configure. None of them offer the sophisticated options that Cobian Backup offers. Yet Cobian is very efficient in memory usage and also user-friendly. Since we started using Cobian we have deleted our backup batch file scripts.

It's true that Windows users cannot live without free and open-source software. Each of them adds an additional functionality to the default windows installation.  A home PC user is likely to have used these software more often than an office PC user, because most of these software are writen to cater for certain needs in home use. But they are yet to use them to perform more sophisticated tasks.Actually some free and open-source software are useful enough to be put into office use. But many office have not adopted the use of such software. It is always hampered by Corporate IT policies: Free, open-source software = quality not assured. To debunk such myth, here we have selected the best software to choose from. Not familiar with GPL licensing, think of possible copyright violation that might arises from the use of such software. A more in-depth understanding of GPL licensing is needed. Because nobody promotes and sells free and open-source software to them, as a result, they need to look for the software on the internet themselves.

If you are an employer, think about the benefit when a simple cleanup using CCleaner to speed up Windows could provide a boost in employee productivity. It's time to discover and harness such an abundant and free IT resources on the internet. Here is a list of good-quality free and open-source software used by us. The details on how to use them effectively will be covered in future.

Some virus or malware could shut down or disable antivirus software or service, block internet access to certain security sites such as Windows Updates and antivirus download sites, or somehow refused to be deleted because the system reported that a file was being accessed.

To work around this problem. You can boot into Safe Mode with Networking to remove them.

Restart computer -> after the first screen, press F5 or F8 -> A menu will show up -> Choose "Safe Mode with Networking" -> Choose an account with administrator access -> Click OK in the next prompt asking whether you want to continue in Safe Mode.

In this Safe Mode, you are still connected to your network or still have wireless access, but all other startup programs are bypassed, possibly including the virus and malware. Only the most persistent virus and malware could get into Safe Mode. When they are no longer functioning, cleaning them will be easy.

Once you are inside the Safe Mode. You can open your browser and search for "antivirus" and "anti-malware" in Google, download and install a decent antivirus software (if you do not have one), and a malware removal software such as Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware,Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and then, just do a full scan with the software. After you have removed the virus and malware, remember to update your Windows on restart.

A friend of mine asked me to drop by and trouble-shoot his computer saying that it is very slow and he can hardly get his things done on it.

the startup process becomes very slow. opening a program or surfing the internet takes ages. "My Computer" takes a long time to load.

My first guess was that some programs were hogging up the CPU in the background. Fixing such a problem is usually very fast. This guide works in XP/Vista/7.

Do you usually spend a long time finding your files, forget where you put them? If so, you might want to install one  of the desktop search engines listed below on your computer, replacing the default search engine of Windows XP or Vista to help you find your stuff fast. Desktop search relies on indexes created beforehand to locate an item during search. It is becoming a handy tool in office environment and could make you more productive at work. All of the tools listed below are able to search basic items like files, folders, documents, media, emails, contacts, etc.

Four Desktop Search engines compared:

So you all have been complainingcomplaining that Adobe Acrobat Reader has turned into a bloatware. Some even suggested using lightweight replacements for efficiency. But does it really perform badly? Here we do a benchmarking to compare Adobe Acrobat ReaderAdobe Acrobat Reader with two other free alternatives: Foxit ReaderFoxit Reader and Cool PDF ReaderCool PDF Reader. We downloaded and installed them all at the same time (their newest versions respectively) on a fresh-installed Windows Vista Ultimate on a Intel Core2Duo CPU P8400@2.26GHz, ~2.2GHz, 1GB RAM Workstation environment.

Want to make your life easier and reduce your frustration when using Microsoft Office? Some users start by learning and using shortcuts immediately, but the improvement is marginal. To increase your productivity, first you must go back to the basics: prepare your work environment so that it is suitable for long hours of work. Here are the seven steps to do so.
